PTC News Desk: The murder accused who allegedly killed his wife and set her ablaze over dowry in Greater Noida, was shot in leg when he attempted to escape from custody.
According to police, Vipin tried to snatch a pistol from an officer while being taken to recover a thinner bottle he had allegedly purchased. He fled from custody near Sirsa Chauraha despite repeated warnings. Police opened fire, and a bullet struck his leg.
However, Vipin Bhati showed no remorse after his arrest. “ I have no remorse. I haven't killed her. She died on her own. Husband and wife often have fights. It is very common”, he said.
Menawhile Nikki's father has alleged that despite fulfilling the dowry demands, her in-laws continued to harass her.
The victim's family had earlier warned of hunger strike if appropriate strict action not taken. “They killed my elder daughter. The accused should be arrested after an encounter. This is Yogi ji’s government. Bulldozers should be used against the accused. Otherwise, we will sit on a hunger strike,” he said.
According to a complaint filed by Nikki’s elder sister, Kanchan, the victim was first beaten unconscious by her husband and then set on fire using an inflammable substance. Kanchan alleged that although the family had given a branded SUV and other valuables during the wedding, Nikki’s in-laws continued to demand additional dowry.
"After marriage, they demanded Rs 35 lakh. We even gave them another car, but their demands and harassment continued unabated," Kanchan said.
