Live-in relationships can never provide security, social acceptance & stability: HC

HC on Live-in relationships: In a recent ruling on live-in relationships, the Allahabad High Court stated that a "systematic design is working to destroy the institution of marriage in India."

The statement was made by the high court while granting bail to a man accused of raping his live-in partner.

According to the single bench of Justice Siddarth, "the security, social acceptance, and stability" that marriage brings to a person is never offered by a live-in relationship. "The brutish concept of changing partners every season cannot be considered to be a hallmark of a stable and healthy society," he remarked.

The high court stated that in India, middle-class morality cannot be overlooked. "Live-in relationships shall only be considered normal after the institution of marriage becomes obsolete in this country, as it has become a major problem for many so-called developed countries to protect the institution of marriage," the top court stated.

The top court also stated in its judgment that if the same pattern continues in the country, "we are proceeding to create a great problem for us in the future."

"Infidelity to a partner in a married relationship and having a free relationship are being shown as signs of a progressive society. The youth gets attracted to such philosophy being advanced, unaware of the long-term consequences", HC added.

Adnan's live-in partner accused him of resiling from his promise to marry her. He was arrested in April of this year on the basis of a complaint lodged by a 19-year-old woman in Saharanpur, Uttar Pradesh.

They shared a home for a year. When the woman became pregnant, Adnan refused to marry her, and she filed a complaint against him, stating that he had sex with her under the false promise of marriage.
