A senior railway engineer was arrested in Lucknow after his daughter-in-law accused him of rape and dowry harassment

PTC Web Desk: A senior railway engineer has been arrested in Lucknow in connection with a rape case filed by his daughter-in-law, the police said.

The accused, identified as 58-year-old Mukesh Kumar Tiwari, had been absconding for several months. According to the police, he was arrested near the carriage repair workshop in Alambagh after receiving information about his whereabouts.

The police said Tiwari is employed as a senior section engineer in the railways. During the investigation, rape charges were added based on the evidence collected.

According to the woman's complaint, she married Tiwari's son, Abhishek Tiwari, in November 2023. She alleged that soon after the marriage, she was subjected to dowry-related harassment and physical and mental abuse at her in-laws' house.

She further alleged that on April 20, 2024, after returning from her parents' home, her father-in-law gave her an intoxicating substance and sexually assaulted her. The woman also claimed she was confined in a room for three days before she managed to contact the police and was rescued.

In her complaint, the survivor also alleged that she was forced to consume alcohol during a gathering held on the night of her wedding and was assaulted when she refused. She claimed her husband and sisters-in-law regularly hosted parties at the house and that her complaints were ignored.

Initially, the police registered a case against the husband and father-in-law under sections related to dowry harassment, assault and criminal intimidation. Later, rape charges were added.

The police said the accused left the area after the charges were added. On Saturday morning, acting on a tip-off, a police team located and arrested him in the Alambagh area. The investigation is continuing.
