Global Passport Index 2026: India ranks 125th, slips one spot from last year
PTC News Desk: India has been ranked 125th among 197 countries in the 2026 Global Passport Index (GPI), released by Global Citizen Solutions. Although India dropped one place from last year, its overall score improved to 45.1, the highest it has achieved in the past five years.
Over the last five years, India’s position has improved only slightly, moving from 127th place in 2021 to 125th in 2026.
According to the index, Indian passport holders can currently travel to 26 countries without a visa or obtain a visa on arrival. These destinations include Bhutan, Nepal, Jamaica, Macau, Palestine, Tunisia, Angola and Barbados.
However, Indian citizens still require visas for many major destinations, including the United States, United Kingdom, Germany, France, China and the United Arab Emirates.
At the top of the 2026 rankings, Sweden secured the first position, followed by Switzerland and Finland. Germany, the Netherlands and Denmark jointly ranked fourth, while Ireland was placed seventh. The United Kingdom, Norway and Singapore completed the top ten. European countries dominated the highest ranks, while Afghanistan was ranked last.
The report also noted that Indian passport holders have access to a total of 56 destinations through a combination of visa-free travel, visa-on-arrival facilities and Electronic Travel Authorisations (ETA).
