2008 Ahmedabad serial blasts: Gujarat HC upholds death sentence to 38, life imprisonment to 11 convicts
PTC News Desk: The Gujarat High Court on Tuesday upheld a 2022 Special Court order awarding death sentence to 38 and life imprisonment to 11 convicts in the 2008 Ahmedabad Serial Blast Case, which claimed 56 lives.
The Gujarat High Court has upheld the convictions and sentences awarded in the 2008 Ahmedabad serial blasts case, confirming the punishment given to members of the terror group Indian Mujahideen (IM).
A division bench of Justices A Y Kogje and Samir Dave agreed with the special court's earlier verdict, which found the accused guilty of planning and carrying out the coordinated bomb attacks in Ahmedabad on July 26, 2008.
The serial blasts took place at 21 locations across the city within just 70 minutes, killing 56 people and injuring more than 200 others. Hospitals where victims were being treated were also targeted, making the attack even more devastating.
In February 2022, a special court had sentenced 38 convicts to death, calling the case one of the "rarest of rare" crimes. Another 11 convicts were given life imprisonment.
With its latest ruling, the Gujarat High Court has upheld both the convictions and the punishments, confirming the death penalty for 38 convicts and life sentences for 11 others in one of India's deadliest terror attack cases.
