Delhi newlywed death: Husband arrested in dowry harassment case after family alleges abuse; salary dispute flashpoint

PTC Web Desk: The investigation into the death of a 28-year-old newlywed woman in Delhi's Lodhi Colony has taken a fresh turn, with police arresting her husband, Arastu Sikka, on charges of dowry harassment.

The arrest came after the woman's family accused her husband and his relatives of subjecting her to continuous mental and physical harassment after their marriage earlier this year.

According to the woman's relatives, the accused family allegedly demanded a car and Rs10 lakh after the couple's love marriage. They claimed she was repeatedly pressured and harassed over the demands.

Her uncle also alleged that the victim's husband initially opposed her working but later insisted that she hand over her entire salary.

Salary dispute became a flashpoint

The woman worked as a sales executive at a private firm in Chhatarpur and was financially supporting her widowed mother after her father's death.

Family members alleged that she wanted to continue sending Rs 5,000 every month to her mother, which often led to arguments at home.

They further claimed that the couple had a heated dispute over the issue just a day before her death.

The victim's relatives have rejected any suggestion that she died by suicide.

Her younger brother said she would never have taken such a step and demanded strict legal action against her husband and in-laws.

The family also expressed regret that they had earlier advised her to return to her matrimonial home despite her complaints of harassment.

The police have confirmed the arrest of the husband and said the investigation is ongoing. Since the woman died within seven years of marriage, proceedings under the relevant legal provisions have been initiated, and further action will be taken based on the findings of the investigation.
