With the help of neighbours, three people were rescued, but the daughter and the elderly father could not escape due to their condition and died inside.
PTC News Desk: Lohri celebrations turned tragic after elderly man and his disabled daughter were burnt to death in Amritsar. The incident occurred during late hours when fire broke out due to spark from Lohri bonfire.
The deceased has been identified as Khajan Singh (86), and his differently-abled daughter, Navdeep Kaur (40).
Soon after receiving the information, 7-8 fire brigade vehicles reached the spot to douse the flame. At least five members were present inside the house when fire broke out. With the help of neighbours, three people were rescued, but the daughter and the elderly father could not escape due to their condition and died inside.
According to locals, the house contained a large amount of flammable items (rumala sahib), which caused the fire to spread rapidly within seconds. The house was located in very narrow lanes, making it difficult for fire trucks to reach the spot, and it took about five hours to bring the fire under control.
SHO Balwinder Singh of B-Division police station said that a detailed investigation is underway to determine the exact cause of the fire.
