Shivakumara Swami, "Walking God", Dies At 111. Politicians Unite In Grief

A well known Lingayat seer of Tumakuru-based Siddaganga Mutt, 111- year-old Dr Shivakumara Swami, passed away on Monday morning in Tumakuru in Karnataka. Dr Shivakumara Swami, famously known as ‘Walking God’ was unwell for a long time now. He was on life-support system for the past two weeks.

The Siddaganga Education Society founded by the seer announced, "The seer left for the heavenly abode leaving his mortal body at 11:44 am."

Padma Bhushan and Karnataka Ratna awardee, Dr Shivakumara Swami had undergone a surgery at a private hospital about two months ago for his liver related ailment. According to media sources, he showed signs of improvement, but it deteriorated in the past few days.

Chief Minister of Karnataka H D Kumaraswamy has announced a government holiday on Tuesday. He also announced state mourning for three days. He told reporters that Dr Shivakumara Swami has shaped the future of many people.

Sree Siddaganga College of Education website mentions his date of birth as April 1, 1907.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his grief on Twitter. He wrote, “I had the privilege to visit the Sree Siddaganga Mutt and receive the blessings of His Holiness Dr. Sree Sree Sree Sivakumara Swamigalu.

The wide range of community service initiatives being done there are outstanding and are at an unimaginably large scale.”
