Tokyo Olympics 2020: Punjab to give Rs 1 crore each to hockey players from state

Punjab Sports Minister Rana Sodhi on Thursday announced that the state government would give Rs. 1 crore each to 11 hockey players who were part of the historic win at the Tokyo Olympics 2020.

"On this historic day for Indian Hockey, I am delighted to announce a cash award of Rs 1 crore each to players from Punjab. We await your return to celebrate the much deserving medal in Olympics," Rana Sodhi tweeted.

It took 41 years, but the dream of every Indian was realised as the men’s hockey team defeated Germany 5-4 to win the bronze medal at the Tokyo Olympics 2020.

Meanwhile, Punjab Chief Minister Captain Amarinder Singh congratulated team India for bagging the bronze medal.

"A proud & historic moment for the nation as Men’s Hockey Team wins Bronze Medal in Olympics by defeating Germany in a scintillating match. A tremendous achievement to be finishing on the podium after 41 years and the Hockey Bronze is worth its weight in Gold. Congratulations," he tweeted.

Former Union Minister Harsimrat Kaur Badal tweeted: "After a long wait of 41 years, the Indian Hockey Team has again captured our hearts and imagination. You have made us all proud! Hoping for a double delight with a win from the Indian Women Hockey Team now. All the best!"

"This is historic! Bravo boys, you were outstanding! I congratulate the Indian Hockey team for bagging a bronze by defeating Germany. India is rejoicing for you and with you!" the SAD President Sukhbir Singh Badal.
