PTC Web Desk: When most people think of Thailand, vibrant beaches, full-moon parties, and exotic street food come to mind. But there’s a tiny green bottle gaining just as much global attention—and it’s not something you eat or drink. It’s the Hong Thai inhaler, a compact herbal pick-me-up that’s taken over social media feeds and found its way into the bags of celebrities worldwide.

Often compared to a Vicks inhaler due to its menthol-like aroma, the Hong Thai inhaler is actually a potent mix of herbal oils and extracts. It's quickly becoming Thailand’s newest must-buy item, especially for tourists seeking an authentic and unique keepsake.

Lisa from Blackpink and celebrity boost

International pop sensation and Thailand’s own Lisa from Blackpink has been one of the biggest reasons for the product’s recent fame. She’s frequently spotted with the green bottle in videos and interviews, including the popular "What’s in My Bag?" series. Fans love seeing the inhaler nestled beside luxury makeup products and high-end accessories, making it an unexpected fashion accessory.

And Lisa isn’t alone. Hollywood star Chris Hemsworth, Korean idol Yonghwa, and singer Jackson Wang have all been seen using or referencing the inhaler, catapulting it further into global fame. It has even made low-key appearances on red carpets and backstage events.

Social media frenzy

Tourists visiting Thailand have begun documenting their discovery of the green bottle in Instagram reels and TikTok videos. Whether it's using it on a humid beach day or packing it up as a cute souvenir, the inhaler’s popularity is now part of the Thailand travel checklist. Its compact size and refreshing scent have made it a travel essential—and now, influencers are even personalising theirs with glittery covers and bejeweled holders.

What’s inside the green bottle?

The creator of this now-viral sensation is Teerapong Rabutham, also known as “Keng.” A Bangkok local, Keng’s journey began two decades ago in a modest neighbourhood near Wat Sra Kaew. Coming from a humble background, he stumbled upon an old herbal recipe in a newspaper and began experimenting. After countless refinements based on customer feedback, the signature Hong Thai formula was born.

Each bottle typically includes: Menthol – for a cooling, nasal-clearing sensation; camphor – helps relieve congestion; eucalyptus oil – refreshes and opens up airways and Borneol – commonly used in traditional medicine.

These natural ingredients give the inhaler its instantly recognisable scent and subtle energy-boosting effects. While not physically addictive, many users admit they reach for it constantly during stressful moments, long workdays, or travel fatigue.

By 2022, Keng’s business was reportedly valued at around $14 million USD. Despite each inhaler selling for just Rs 60-70 in local Thai stores, the sheer volume of sales—especially among tourists—has made it a booming enterprise. Today, many sellers are listing it on international platforms at higher prices, including e-commerce sites.
