It's a boy! Haryana couple welcomes 11th child, a baby boy, after 10 daughters

PTC Web Desk: A labourer couple from Haryana has welcomed their 11th child, a baby boy, after having 10 daughters.

The high-risk delivery took place at a private hospital in Jind district earlier this week. The 37-year-old woman was admitted on January 3 and delivered the baby the next day. Despite serious complications, both the mother and the newborn are stable and were discharged within a day.

The father, Sanjay Kumar (38), a daily-wage labourer from Bhuna in Fatehabad district, said he and his family were hoping for a son. Married in 2007, Sanjay is now the father of 11 children. His eldest daughter studies in Class 12, while most of the other girls are also enrolled in school.

“We were keen that there should be a son, and even my elder daughters wished to have a brother,” he said, adding that he is doing his best to educate his daughters within his limited means. “Whatever has happened is God’s will, and I am happy,” he said.

Responding to criticism on social media and allegations of a patriarchal mindset, Sanjay claimed he does not discriminate against his daughters. “Girls today can achieve anything. They have proved themselves in every field and make everyone proud,” he said.

A video related to the family has gone viral on social media, showing Sanjay being asked by a woman reporter to name all his daughters. He managed to recall most names but fumbled on a couple, drawing sharp reactions online.

According to the family, sweets were distributed at the hospital to celebrate the birth of the boy. Sanjay also revealed that relatives and neighbours had openly expressed hopes for a male child, reflecting the continued societal pressure for a son.

The incident comes at a time when Haryana’s sex ratio remains under scrutiny. Although the state recorded an improvement in 2025, with 923 females per 1,000 males—up 13 points from the previous year—it still lags behind the national average of 1,020.
