ATP Rankings: Roger Federer hits 21-year low; Djokovic's retains No 1 rank

Roger Federer, the 20-time Grand Slam champion, has hit a 21-year-low in the ATP rankings released by the association on Monday. The last time Federer dropped this low in the ATP rankings was in January 2001, when he was just 19 years old. Notably, he had yet to win his first tour title. With 1,665 points, the 40-year-old is now in 30th rank. Federer dropped to 13 places in the rankings after missing the Australian Open in 2022. Notably, the 103-time tour-level champion participated at Wimbledon 2021. Federer, in August, took to Instagram and had announced that he will miss "many months" after undergoing knee surgery. Federer has participated in five tournaments since having those surgeries, all of which took place in the 2021 season. Meanwhile, Novak Djokovic is still atop the men's tennis rankings as he enters his 358th week as the world's number one. While Djokovic has held the World No. 1 ranking for the majority of his career, he now trails Rafael Nadal in the all-time Grand Slam tally. Nadal, 35, became the first player in tennis history to win 21 Grand Slams on Sunday, defeating Daniil Medvedev in the Australian Open final after coming back from two-sets-to-love. Nadal's win retains him at No. 5 in the rankings, but the Spaniard is now only 910 ranking points away from returning to the top 3. Meanwhile, Medvedev is at number 2 followed by Alexander Zverev (No. 3), Stefanos Tsitsipas (No. 4) and Nadal. Medvedev will now get the chance to overtake Djokovic in the rankings depending on how the pair perform at ATP events in Rotterdam and Dubai respectively.
