Black Lives Matter: Cop who killed George Floyd sentenced to over 22 years
George Floyd murder: Former Minneapolis police Officer Derek Chauvin, who killed George Floyd, has been sentenced to 22.5 years in prison. George Floyd's dying gasps under Chauvin’s knee led to the major outrage against racial injustice in the US in generations.
Prosecutors had requested the punishment of 30 years while Derek Chauvin was sentenced to 22.5 years in prison.

However, Chauvin, with good behavior, could be paroled after serving two-thirds of his sentence, or about 15 years.

The 45-year-old officer broke his long courtroom silence Friday as he faced sentencing for the murder of George Floyd. He even offered condolences to Floyd’s family.
“I do want to give my condolences to the Floyd family. There’s going to be some other information in the future that would be of interest. And I hope things will give you some peace of mind,” he said.
Floyd’s family members expressed sorrow about his death and asked for the maximum penalty.
Chauvin has been convicted of second-degree unintentional murder, third-degree murder and second-degree manslaughter for pressing his knee against Floyd’s neck.
