Bus carrying Char Dham yatris falls into gorge near Uttarakhand's Damta; 22 killed

Uttarakhand, June 5: A bus carrying over 28 Char Dham yatris from Panna district in Madhya Pradesh fell into a gorge near Damta in Uttarkashi district on Sunday.

According to recent reports, at least 22 people have been killed and several are injured. The death toll in the accident is expected to rise.

The police and SDRF have reached the spot and initiated a rescue operation, DGP Ashok Kumar informed. The injured have been rushed to the nearby hospitals, he added.

As per media reports, the bus Char Dham yatris had left Haridwar at 10:00 am on Sunday. The accident occurred on the Yamunotri National Highway between Damta and Bernigad.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has announced an ex-gratia of Rs 2 lakhs each for the families of the deceased and Rs 50,000 each for the injured in a bus accident.

Meanwhile, Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami reached Disaster Control Room in Dehradun. He further directed the district administration to carry out relief & rescue work expeditiously along with proper treatment of the injured, according to CMO.

Union Home Minister Amit Shah also expressed grief over the tragic incident.

"News of bus carrying pilgrims falling into a gorge in Uttarakhand is extremely sad. I discussed the incident with Chief Minister Pushkar Dhami. Teams of local administration and SDRF are engaged in rescue work and the injured are being taken to the nearest hospital for treatment. The NDRF is also getting there soon," said Shah in a roughly translated tweet.
