Canada breaks immigration record by welcoming 401,000 new immigrants in 2021
Amid post-pandemic recovery mode, Canada has set a target of welcoming 401,000 new immigrants in 2021, as part of the 2021–2023 Immigration Levels Plan.
The Minister of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship of Canada, Sean Fraser, announced that Canada welcomed more than 401,000 new permanent residents in the year 2021, surpassing the previous record from 1913.

This milestone is significant in the wake of the challenges prevailing out of the coronavirus panemic. From closed borders to lockdowns, migration across the globe has been elevated by Covid-19. However, the employees of Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) processed a record half a million applications in 2021, Sean Fraser said.

IRCC added resources, embracing new technology and bringing up more processes online. It is pertinent to mention that such changes are all permanent improvements to Canada’s immigration system.
The majority of these new permanent residents were already in Canada on a temporary status. Canada launched new programs to engage essential workers, health care professionals, international graduates and French-speaking newcomers.
With many countries closing their doors to refugees, Canada offered the world’s most vulnerable shelter in the country, Fraser added.
Reportedly, one in 3 Canadian businesses is owned by an immigrant while 1 in 4 healthcare workers is a newcomer. The new Canadians are contributing to communities across Canada on a daily basis, said Sean Fraser.
