The Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) today demanded the Congress government come clean and tell the youth why it had back stabbed them in the name of ‘ghar ghar naukari’ when it did not have any intention of providing a single government job to them.

In a statement here, former minister Bikram Singh Majithia demanded a high level probe into the ‘job fair’ scam under which money from the State exchequer was released for jobs fairs which did not offer any jobs. He said according to recent revelations the Congress government had wasted Rs 38 lakh on organizing six so called job fairs in chief minister Capt Amarinder Singh’s home constituency of Patiala in the last two years. “Similarly crores have been wasted in organising such events across the State. This points to a multi crore scam under which State funds have been pilfered in the name of providing jobs to youth”.

Demanding a white paper on this issue in the forthcoming budget session, the SAD general secretary said the State must list how many government jobs were given to youth as part of the sham events hosted by it. “If the answer is none, which is the factual position, the Congress government must disclose why tax payer money was misappropriated in the name of job fairs”.

Referring to attempts to take credit for jobs offered to youth as part of the placement drives of various educational institutions for which private companies were invited, Mr Majithia said now the youth had started shunning these drives also. “The Congress government’s credibility is at an all time low because it has reneged on every promise made to the youth. This is why youth are not attending any event organized by the government to facilitate jobs in the private sector”.

Mr Majithia said the Congress government’s criminal negligence in providing jobs to youth had resulted in an upsurge of migration to foreign countries. “It has simultaneously derailed the State’s economy which is already battling an agricultural crisis due to non fulfillment of the Rs 90,000 crore loan waiver as well as rampant farmer suicides”.

The Akali leader said besides jobs, the Congress government had also promised an Rs 2,500 unemployment allowance to the youth besides promising smart phones. “These commitments, which were made in the party’s election manifesto, also remain a pipe dream”, he added.

Mr Majithia said the SAD was in the process of initiating a State wide stir to compel the Congress government to fulfill the promises made to the youth. “We will not rest till this is achieved”, he added.
