Delhi CM Rekha Gupta's attacker remanded to 5-day police custody
PTC News Desk: Rajesh Khimji, who attacked Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta during a public meeting on Wednesday, has been remanded to five days of police custody. The 41-year-old, identified as Sakriya Rajeshbhai Khimjibhai from Rajkot, Gujarat, was produced before court and charged with attempt to murder.
The incident occurred around 8:15 am during a 'Jan Sunwai' programme at Gupta’s camp office in Civil Lines. Her office alleged that the assault was part of a "pre-planned conspiracy to eliminate her." The chief minister suffered injuries to her hand, shoulder, and head, according to Delhi PWD Minister Parvesh Verma.
Police said Khimji is being interrogated by both the Intelligence Bureau and the Delhi Police Special Cell. A senior officer described the attack as “serious” and potentially life-threatening.
Following the incident, Gupta, 51, condemned the attack as a "cowardly attempt" but asserted that it had not weakened her determination to serve the people, adding that the Jan Sunwai programme would continue.
Preliminary investigation suggests the accused, known to be a dog lover, may have acted out of anger over the recent Supreme Court order concerning stray dogs.
