Delhi riot case: Umar Khalid’s bail plea rejected

Delhi's Karkardooma Court on Thursday dismissed bail to former JNU student leader Umar Khalid in a case related to Delhi riots of 2020. Additional sessions judge Amitabh Rawat on March 3rd reserved the order after hearing arguments from both Mr Khalid's and the prosecution's attorneys.

The prosecution even argued that Umar Khalid was ‘veteran of sedition’ and ‘silent whisper behind the first phase of the riots that took place in 2019.’

Former-JNU-student-activist-denied-bail--4 Umar Khalid was arrested on September 13 in 2020 under sections of the Unlawful Activities Prevention Act (UAPA). He was also charged for being one of the "masterminds" of the February 2020 riots, due to which 53 people died and more than 700 injured. Apart from Umar Khalid, 18 people have been arrested for the Delhi riots larger conspiracy case, but only 6 have received bail so far. Reason of Delhi riots was the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA), which grants citizenship to non-Muslim immigrants from three neighbouring Muslim-majority countries - Afghanistan, Pakistan and Bangladesh.
