Earthquake of 4.3 magnitude hits Kargil in Ladakh

Kargil (Ladakh), September 19: An earthquake measuring 4.3 on the Richter scale hit Ladakh's Kargil on Monday morning. According to the National Center for Seismology (NCS), the earthquake struck around 9:30 am and was located 10 kilometres below the ground. The epicentre was 151 km West North West of Kargil, NCS informed. Taking to Twitter, NCS said, "An earthquake of magnitude 4.3 occurred 64 km WNW of Kargil, Ladakh at around 9:30 am. The depth of the earthquake was 10 km below the ground." Meanwhile, no life or property loss was recorded. The region has witnessed several earthquakes recently, all below the intensity of 5. Both Leh and Ladak are located in the country's Seismic Zone-IV, making them extremely vulnerable to earthquakes. Tremors are common in Leh and Ladakh. Because the Himalayan mountain range is the result of tectonic plate movements, it is normal for regions around the plate margins to experience mild earthquakes from time to time.
