PTC Web Desk: The biographical film 'Amar Singh Chamkila', based on the life of the iconic 1990s Punjabi folk singer, has been officially nominated for the International Emmy Awards. The film has secured nominations in two major categories: Best Actor and Best TV Movie/Mini-Series. Diljit Dosanjh portrayed the legendary 'Chamkila' in the film, while Bollywood actress Parineeti Chopra played his wife, Amarjot Kaur.

The announcement was shared by Diljit Dosanjh on his social media handle, where he also thanked director Imtiaz Ali for entrusting him with the role. Imtiaz Ali congratulated the entire team for the film’s Emmy nominations and extended his best wishes to them.

Speaking about the nomination, Diljit Dosanjh said, “I feel truly honoured that Amar Singh Chamkila, a celebrated artist from Punjab, is being recognised on such a prestigious international platform. This nomination is not just for me but for the entire legacy of Amar Singh Chamkila. I am grateful to Imtiaz Ali for selecting me for this role.”

Chamkila was one of Punjab’s most popular folk singers during the 1990s, widely known for his energetic live performances. Tragically, he and his wife Amarjot were shot dead on stage at Mohkampur village, Punjab, on March 8, 1988. Allegations pointed towards supporters of the Khalistan movement, as Chamkila’s lyrics were considered controversial by certain groups.

Decades later, director Imtiaz Ali brought Chamkila’s life story to the screen, highlighting both his immense popularity and the tragic end that shocked Punjab.
