PTC Web Desk: Television queen Ekta Kapoor is set to revive her iconic family drama 'Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi', with none other than Smriti Irani stepping back into the legendary role of Tulsi Virani. The revival marks the show’s 25th anniversary and will feature a limited run of episodes—designed not for TRPs, but for sparking conversations.

Taking to Instagram, Ekta shared a heartfelt note titled "WHY KYUNKI, WHY NOW?" where she explained what made her change her mind about relaunching the iconic show. Her initial instinct was a resounding no. “You can never compete with nostalgia,” she wrote. “Nostalgia always wins.”

But something deeper nudged her to reconsider. Ekta acknowledged the evolution of television and the changing preferences in a post-OTT world. She questioned whether bringing back  'Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi' might risk its legacy of high TRPs. However, an old research study helped her look at the show differently.

The international study revealed that Kyunki was not just a TRP topper—it was a cultural shift. Between 2000 and 2005, Indian women began actively participating in household decisions, partly influenced by the bold topics the show addressed. From domestic and marital rape to age shaming and euthanasia, Kyunki brought taboo subjects into mainstream living rooms. The show sparked discussions around the dining table,” Ekta reflected. “That was its real legacy.”

Ekta admitted that the original show’s ending was abrupt and left unfinished stories behind. So when the team proposed a limited-episode comeback, she saw an opportunity—not to chase numbers but to tell meaningful stories.

The second part will explore modern themes like parenting, the fine line between care and control, and social issues often brushed under the carpet. “This isn’t about beating nostalgia,” she wrote, “It’s about impact.”

She promised the new episodes would be high on entertainment and emotion, yet grounded in relatable issues—without being preachy.

“Kyunki is coming back to celebrate 25 years, to entertain, inspire, and ignite dialogue. It’s for those who watched it then, and those who’ll discover it now,” she wrote. The new season of 'Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi' will premiere on July 29 at 10.30 pm on Star Plus and JioCinema’s Disney Hotstar platform.

Originally aired from 2000 to 2008, Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi ran for over 1,800 episodes and became one of Indian television’s most beloved family dramas. The show turned Smriti Irani into a household name and launched the careers of several TV stars.

Now, a generation later, Ekta Kapoor is ready to bring Kyunki back—not as a replica, but as a reflection of today’s society, armed with purpose, emotion, and powerful storytelling.
