FIFA World Cup 2018: Uruguay edges out Egypt by a solitary goal
Playing without their mercurial and star player Mohammad Salah, Egypt went down to more fancied Uruguay by a late second half goal in a pool "A" match of FIFA World Cup 2018.
Mohd Salah was on the bench but did not play.
The elusive goal that made the Uruguian die hards and soccer fans wait till the last minute of the stipulated period, came from a deft header of J.M. Gimenez following a free kick that left the Egyptian goalkeeper El Shanawy in a hopeless position.
Otherwise, El Shanawy had a wonderful game bringing off some excellent saves, including a couple from Edison Cavani, one of top scorers for Uruguay.
No doubt the Egyptians, playing their first final since 1990, made the more experienced Uruguay struggle hard for the mach winner, they, too had to blame themselves for the defeat.
The Egyptians also had their share of chances in the first half and allowed the Uruguay to attack their citadel frequently late in the second half.
In the 73rd minute L. Suarrez almost gave the Uruguay the lead but for El Schany who took the ball away from the attackers's feet just in front of the goalmouth.
Four minutes later, El Schanawy made another excellent save of an attempt by Edison Cavani from the middle of the box.
With three points, Uruguay now move to second spot behind the hosts Russia in group A while both Egypt and Saudi Arabia remain pointless after their respective first match defeats.
