IIT Bombay student dies by suicide, cites depression in death-note

A student at the Indian Institutes of Technology (IIT) Bombay allegedly died by suicide on Monday. The 26-year-old student jumped from the seventh floor of the hostel building located on the Powai campus at around 4:30 am. According to the police, the deceased was a master’s student in his second year of the programme. Following the incident, he was rushed to Rajawadi Hospital in Ghatkopar but was declared brought dead. The deceased has been identified as Darshan Malviya. He was undergoing treatment for depression, informed a senior officer said. According to a Powai police station official, he had written a note on the board in his hostel room declaring that no one should be held accountable for his death. The watchman immediately called up an official of the institute and later the police were informed. The deceased student hailed from Madhya Pradesh. According to the official, his family members were informed of his death. The Powai Police has registered a case of accidental death and the investigation into the matter is underway.
