India's R Praggnanandhaa defeats world no.1 Magnus Carlsen in chess
Young Indian Grandmaster Rameshbabu Praggnanandhaa stunned world number 1, Magnus Carlsen, in the online rapid chess tournament Airthings Masters.
On Monday,16-year-old Praggnanandhaa hit the headlines as he won with black pieces in 39 moves in a Tarrasch variation game, ending Carlsen's three-game winning streak.
R Praggnanandhaa now lies in joint 12th spot after eight rounds with eight points. His stunning win over Carlsen follows a mediocre performance in the earlier rounds, which included a single victory over Lev Aronian, two draws, and four losses.
In the early rounds of the Airthings Masters, a 16-person online rapid tournament, a player receives three points for a win and one point for a draw. In the preliminary round, there are seven more rounds to go.

After former World Champion Vishwanathan Anand and GM Pentala Harikrishna, Rameshbabu Praggnanandhaa became only the third Indian in history to defeat Magnus Carlsen.
Moreover, Pragganandhaa joins Abhimanyu Mishra, Sergey Karjakin, Gukesh D, and Javokhir Sindarov as the fifth-youngest Grandmaster in history. He first gained fame in 2013, when he won the World Youth Chess Championships Under-8 title, earning him the FIDE Master title at the age of seven.
Praggnanandhaa became the youngest international master in 2016 at the age of 10 years, 10 months, and 19 days after winning the U-10 title in 2015. After defeating Luca Moroni in the eighth round of the Gredine Open in Urtijei in 2018, he became the second-youngest person ever to achieve the rank of grandmaster at the age of 12 years, 10 months, and 13 days.
