World Blood Donor Day 2023: World Blood Donor Day, observed on June 14 every year, is a global initiative to raise awareness of the need for safe blood. The day also honours those who donate blood.
Blood donation is a life-saving gift that ensures the availability of safe blood and blood products in times of emergency or necessity. Blood donation is a simple procedure that can save someone's life. Blood donation benefits not only the recipient but also the donor.
As a society, regular blood donation can ensure that safe and sustainable blood is always accessible, allowing for timely treatment.
World Health Organization has assigned the theme, "Give blood, give plasma, share life, share often" for World Blood Donor Day 2023.
A few conditions must be met before donating blood.
A donor should weigh at least 50 kg (donors can not weigh less than 45 kg in some countries)
Donor should be between 18 and 65 years of age
Donor should not have a cold, flu, sore throat or other infections.
Donor must have a haemoglobin count that is not less than 12.5 g/dl
During donation, donor's blood pressure should be normal
Meanwhile, pregnant or lactating women or those who have had an abortion recently cannot donate blood. Moreover, if you have recently had a tattoo or body piercing you can't donate blood for the next 6 months
After a simple dental procedure, you must wait 24 hours, and a month after a major dental procedure.
If you have ever tested positive for HIV or have ever injected recreational drugs, you can not donate blood.
