World Environment Day 2023: Date, theme, history, significance & celebrations

World Environment Day 2023: World Environment Day (WED) is celebrated on the 5th of June every year and serves as a global platform for raising awareness and promoting actions for the protection of our environment. It was established by the United Nations General Assembly in 1972, during the Stockholm Conference on the Human Environment.

                   


World Environment Day 2023: Theme

World Environment Day is celebrated with a different theme every year and the one for this year is already decided. The theme for World Environment Day 2023 is "Beat Plastic Pollution."

World Environment Day 2023 is being hosted by the Republic of Côte d’Ivoire, also known as Ivory Coast, in West Africa. The Netherlands will be its partner this year. Côte d’Ivoire has already banned plastic bags.

World Environment Day 2023: History 

The idea of World Environment Day was proposed by the United Nations to mark the beginning of the United Nations Conference on the Human Environment. This conference aimed to discuss pressing environmental issues and set the stage for global environmental policies. On June 5, 1972, the conference commenced in Stockholm, Sweden, with the participation of delegates from 113 countries. The delegates agreed to establish World Environment Day as an annual event to raise awareness about environmental concerns.

World Environment Day 2023: Significance 

World Environment Day holds significant importance as it provides an opportunity for individuals, communities, and governments to reflect on environmental challenges and take action. It serves as a global platform to increase awareness about various environmental issues such as pollution, deforestation, climate change, and biodiversity loss. The day encourages people to engage in sustainable practices and advocate for positive changes in their communities. It also promotes the concept of environmental stewardship and emphasizes the need for collective action to safeguard the planet for future generations.

 

World Environment Day 2023: Celebrations 

World Environment Day is celebrated in various ways across the globe. The day is marked by a host country chosen by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) each year, which serves as a focal point for the celebrations. The host country organizes various events, such as street rallies, tree planting campaigns, community clean-up drives, and environmental awareness programs.
