Manipur Elections 2022: BJP announces candidates for all 60 Assembly seats

Manipur Assembly Elections 2022: Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has announced tickets for candidates for all 60 assembly seats in the state ahead of polls. Sitting Chief Minister N Biren Singh will contest the upcoming elections from the Heingang constituency. While PWD minister in the government Thangom Biswajit Singh will contest the polls from Thongju. BJP has given tickets to people cutting across sections of society including women doctors, IAS officers and sportspersons. Former footballers N Biren Singh, Letpao Haokip and Somatai Shaiza along with Martial Arts player Yumnam Khemchand Singh have been given tickets by the saffron party.   The party has nominated three retired IAS officers Kh. Raghumani Singh, Yengkhom Surchandra Singh and Dinganglung Gangmei (Dipu). Only two sitting MLAs were not given tickets by the party for the upcoming assembly elections in Manipur. “When Prime Minister Narendra Modi visited Manipur, the people were elated and delighted that he holds us in such high regard. As a result, Manipur’s people have decided to keep PM Modi close to their hearts by voting the government with a two-thirds majority,” said the in-charge of the BJP in Manipur, Sambit Patra. The BJP has set the target of securing a two-thirds majority with at least 40 seats out of a total of 60. “The BJP will run for all 60 seats and will secure a majority on its own. The Modi government has ensured that Manipur has a stable government and that the region’s development and peace would continue,” Bhupendra Yadav, the BJP’s Manipur election in-charge, remarked. The NDA, led by the BJP, currently holds a majority in the assembly. There are 30 BJP MLAs, three NPP MLAs, four NDF MLAs and three independents. Leading the NDA government, Biren Singh formed the government in Manipur on March 15, 2017. However, it received a huge setback in June 2020, when nine MLAs, including ministers, resigned their support, bringing the government to a minority. Within a week of the central leadership intervening, four NPP MLAs returned to the NDA fold, preventing the government from collapsing. Manipur will hold elections in two phases, on February 27 and March 3, for 60 Assembly seats. The results will be released on March 10th.
