Mojtaba Khamenei sustained critical injuries, face disfigured, one leg lost but mentally sharp: Report

PTC News Desk: Mojtaba Khamenei is reportedly recovering from serious facial and leg injuries sustained in an airstrike that killed his father, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, at the start of the war, according to sources cited by Reuters.

The strike targeted the Supreme Leader’s compound in central Tehran on February 28, the first day of the conflict involving the United States and Israel. Sources said Mojtaba Khamenei suffered severe injuries, including facial disfigurement and significant damage to one or both legs. Several of his family members, including his wife and in-laws, were reportedly killed in the same attack.

Despite his condition, he is said to remain mentally alert and actively involved in governance. According to sources, he continues to participate in high-level decision-making—including matters related to the war and negotiations with Washington—through audio conferencing with senior officials.

There has been no official confirmation from Iran regarding the extent of his injuries. Since the airstrike and his reported appointment as Supreme Leader on March 8, no public images, videos, or audio recordings of him have been released, adding to uncertainty about his health and role. Iran’s mission to the United Nations has also not responded to queries on the matter.

One source familiar with US intelligence assessments told Reuters that Khamenei may have lost a leg, while US Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth had earlier described him as “wounded and likely disfigured.” Iranian state media has only briefly referred to him as a “janbaz,” a term used for those severely injured in war.

A senior Iranian official indicated that images of the new leader could be released within the next month or two, with a possible public appearance depending on his health and security situation.
