Mattewara textile park project: Activists celebrate victory by cutting cake by Belfrance

Ludhiana, July 11: As CM Bhagwant Mann-led Punjab Government decided to scrap the proposed industrial park in the historic Mattewara forest along the Sutlej river, environmentalists and activists on Monday celebrated the big victory by cutting cake by Belfrance.

The 'jungle theme cake' made by seven chefs weighed 50 Kg. The decision on the Mattewara forest issue was taken after a meeting of the eight-member committee with Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann. Eminent environmentalist and social activist Harjinder Singh Kukreja celebrated the victory outside his restaurant, Hot Bread / Belfrance at Main Market, Sarabha Nagar, Ludhiana, with all activists and the Punjab Action Committee (PAC).

"Punjab government's plan to set up a textile industry park by razing the forest of Mattewara was a direct threat to the environment. It was an act of poisoning and polluting the Sutlej River's clean water. The Mattewara Public Action Committee's leaders fought with all of Punjab's environmentalists to prevent this and the Punjab government had to overturn the erroneous decision," he said.

He further added that environmental conditions are worsening across the globe and there is a need to take some serious measures. The increasing use of chemical fertilisers and pesticides has a direct impact on food production and is rapidly harming humankind. "We need to be aware of this on a large scale. I urge the people to consume healthy food and to use organic farming products to keep their bodies healthy and protect the environment," he added.
