1984 anti-Sikh riots: Sajjan Kumar convicted; quantum of sentence likely on Feb 18

PTC Web Desk: In a significant development, the Delhi Rouse Avenue Court has convicted former Congress leader Sajjan Kumar in connection with the killing of two Sikhs in Saraswati Vihar during the 1984 anti-Sikh riots. The court has scheduled the sentencing hearing for February 18.

Sajjan Kumar was found guilty of involvement in the killings of Jaswant Singh and his son Tarundeep Singh on November 1, 1984, in Saraswati Vihar. Charges against him were framed under multiple sections of the Indian Penal Code, including 147 (rioting), 148 (armed with a deadly weapon), 149 (unlawful assembly), 302 (murder), 308 (attempt to commit culpable homicide), 323 (voluntarily causing hurt), 395 (dacoity), 397 (robbery with attempt to cause death or grievous hurt), 427 (mischief causing damage), 436 (mischief by fire or explosive substance), and 440 (mischief causing hurt).


According to the Special Investigation Team (SIT), Kumar allegedly incited and led the mob responsible for burning the victims alive, destroying their household belongings, and looting their property. The mob also set fire to their house and inflicted severe injuries on the family members and relatives residing there.

On November 1, 2023, the court recorded Sajjan Kumar's statement, wherein he denied all charges levelled against him.
