1984 Sikh genocide: Sajjan Kumar gets life imprisonment

1984 Sikh genocide: The Delhi Rouse Avenue Court on Tuesday awarded life imprisonment to former Congress leader Sajjan Kumar in a case related to Sikh genocide in 1984.

He was convicted by the court in connection with the killing of two Sikhs in Saraswati Vihar during the 1984 anti-Sikh riots.  Sajjan Kumar was found guilty of involvement in the killings of Jaswant Singh and his son Tarundeep Singh on November 1, 1984, in Saraswati Vihar. Charges against him were framed under multiple sections of the Indian Penal Code, including 147 (rioting), 148 (armed with a deadly weapon), 149 (unlawful assembly), 302 (murder), 308 (attempt to commit culpable homicide), 323 (voluntarily causing hurt), 395 (dacoity), 397 (robbery with attempt to cause death or grievous hurt), 427 (mischief causing damage), 436 (mischief by fire or explosive substance), and 440 (mischief causing hurt).

According to the Special Investigation Team (SIT), Kumar incited and led the mob responsible for burning the victims alive, destroying their household belongings, and looting their property. The mob also set fire to their house and inflicted severe injuries on the family members and relatives residing there.


On November 1, 2023, the court recorded Sajjan Kumar's statement, wherein he denied all charges levelled against him.

Sajjan Kumar: Acquitted in one Case, convicted in Two

Palam Colony Massacre (Delhi Cantonment):  Following the brutal killing of five Sikhs in Palam Colony, their gurdwara was set ablaze. Sajjan Kumar was found guilty in this case, and on December 17, 2018, the Delhi High Court sentenced him to life imprisonment.

Sultanpuri Killings:  In September 2023, the Rouse Avenue Court acquitted Sajjan Kumar in a case related to the killing of three Sikhs in Sultanpuri. CBI’s key witness, Cham Kaur, had alleged that he incited the mob during the riots.

Saraswati Vihar murders: On November 1, 1984, Sardar Jaswant Singh and his son, Tarundeep Singh, were brutally attacked with iron rods and sticks before being burned alive by rioters. On February 12, 2025, Sajjan Kumar was convicted, and on February 25, he was sentenced to life imprisonment.
