Air India received 9 show-cause notices linked to safety violations in past 6 months, says govt

PTC Web Desk: In the past six months, Air India has received nine show-cause notices linked to five distinct safety violations, Minister of State for Civil Aviation Murlidhar Mohol informed the Rajya Sabha on Monday. He said enforcement action had been concluded in one of the cases so far.

Responding to a query regarding the tragic Air India AI171 crash on June 12 in Ahmedabad, the minister clarified that there were no adverse trends reported in the aircraft’s reliability reports over the past six months.

The minister confirmed that an official investigation has been initiated by the Director General of the Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau (AAIB) under Rule 11 of the Aircraft (Investigation of Accidents & Incidents) Rules, 2017. The goal is to determine the underlying causes and contributing factors of the fatal incident.

A preliminary report on the crash was published by AAIB on July 12, 2025, and is available on their official website: http://aaib.gov.in. The probe is still underway.

The AI171 Boeing 787-7 flight was bound for London when it crashed moments after takeoff from Ahmedabad Airport, slamming into a nearby medical hostel. The accident claimed 241 lives out of 242 passengers on board, along with multiple fatalities on the ground.

According to initial AAIB findings, fuel switches for both engines were cut off seconds after takeoff. Cockpit voice recordings from the black boxes revealed one pilot questioning the other about the cutoff. The second pilot reportedly denied initiating the action, indicating a potential miscommunication or technical anomaly.
