Air India to halt Delhi–Washington direct flights from September 1
PTC Web Desk: Air India has announced suspension of its non-stop service between Delhi and Washington DC, starting September 1, as part of operational adjustments linked to a major fleet overhaul and ongoing international airspace limitations.
The airline explained that the move is due to a temporary shortage of aircraft while 26 Boeing 787-8 Dreamliners undergo an extensive retrofit programme launched last month. The upgrade, expected to conclude by late 2026, is aimed at enhancing cabin interiors and overall passenger comfort. However, the process will keep several aircraft grounded at any given time.
Adding to the challenge is the prolonged closure of Pakistani airspace, which forces Air India’s long-haul flights on certain routes to take lengthier detours, increasing flight times and operational complexities.
“All passengers booked on the Delhi–Washington route beyond September 1 will be contacted directly to arrange rebooking on alternative flights or to provide full refunds,” Air India stated. Travellers will still be able to reach Washington via one-stop connections through Air India’s existing US gateways in New York, Newark, Chicago, and San Francisco, through partnerships with Alaska Airlines, United Airlines, and Delta Air Lines.
Despite the suspension, Air India will continue to operate direct flights between India and six North American destinations, including Toronto and Vancouver.
