Bangladesh deploys Bayraktar TB2 drones near West Bengal; India may opt for counter-drone operations
PTC Web Desk: India has increased security measures along the Bangladesh border following reports of Turkey-made Bayraktar TB2 drones being stationed near West Bengal, according to sources. These drones, operated by Bangladesh's 67th Army, are used for intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance missions. While Bangladesh claims the deployment is for defensive purposes, India is closely monitoring the situation due to its strategic implications.
The development coincides with intelligence inputs suggesting a rise in terrorist activity along the border following the fall of Sheikh Hasina's Awami League government. Extremist groups, earlier subdued during Hasina's tenure, are reportedly exploiting political instability to re-establish their presence near Indian borders.
A senior intelligence officer highlighted concerns over the surge in anti-India elements and the potential misuse of advanced UAVs in these sensitive regions.
Bangladesh recently operationalised six of the 12 Bayraktar TB2 drones procured earlier this year, enhancing its surveillance and light-strike capabilities. These advanced UAVs are seen as a significant addition to Bangladesh's defense arsenal, raising concerns in India about their proximity to the border.
The Indian armed forces remain on high alert and are assessing options, including deploying Heron TP drones and intensifying counter-drone operations in vulnerable areas. "We are closely observing developments and will implement necessary countermeasures to safeguard our borders," a senior defense official stated.
India is also working with international partners through intelligence-sharing arrangements to address the evolving situation in Bangladesh.
