Ensure no unauthorised person enter premises: Chandigarh child rights panel issues advisory after bomb threats to schools
PTC Web Desk: Chandigarh is on high alert after a series of bomb threats targeted the city’s schools and the Punjab and Haryana Secretariat. Authorities have yet to identify the individuals behind these threats, which initially affected nearly 30 schools across the city.
The first threat was reported on January 28 when messages warning of explosions in schools created widespread panic. Several schools had to be temporarily closed while the police conducted thorough inspections. The messages included alarming references to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and described Chandigarh in the context of separatist sentiments.
The following day, January 29, a similar threat was directed at the Punjab and Haryana Secretariat. Security forces, including the Punjab Police, intensified vigilance given the city’s history, including past attacks such as the bombing targeting former Chief Minister Beant Singh.
In response to the growing number of threats and cybercrimes, the Chandigarh Commission for Protection of Child Rights (CCPCR) has issued a crucial advisory for schools.
Schools are advised to implement strict access controls and ensure that no unauthorised individuals enter the premises. Any suspicious objects should be immediately reported and examined. Installation of metal detectors and other safety equipment is recommended, especially during annual events or large gatherings.
Any threat messages, suspicious emails, phishing links or unusual calls should be reported to local authorities without delay. Regular training sessions for principals, teachers, administrative personnel, and security staff should be conducted by the Chandigarh Police or cybercrime units, covering disaster management, cyber safety, emergency response, and crowd control.
Schools should actively counter misinformation and rely solely on official government communications. Educational sessions on safe use of digital platforms and responsible sharing of information are encouraged. Schools should establish clear channels to provide verified updates to parents promptly, reducing panic.
CCPCR chairperson Shipra Bansal praised Chandigarh’s administration for its proactive approach, noting that the city is committed to creating a safe and secure environment for children through coordinated efforts among various stakeholders.
