CBI officer Nupur Prasad, who led probe into Sushant Singh Rajput's death, awarded President's medal
PTC News Desk: Senior IPS officer Nupur Prasad who headed the CBI investigation into the death of actor Sushant Singh Rajput, has been awarded the Medal for Meritorious Service (MSM) this year.
She is currently serving as Joint Commissioner of Police in the Economic Offences Wing (EOW), where she oversees investigation into financial and economic crimes.
She was the first DCP of Delhi’s Shahdara district, where she took action against drug networks and gambling activities. She also handled security arrangements for Delhi University elections and Independence Day celebrations at the Red Fort.
During her career, Prasad has served with the Delhi Police, CBI, and in Arunachal Pradesh and West Bengal. She has handled several sensitive cases and important investigations.
Role in Sushant Singh Rajput case
Prasad gained national attention when she was assigned to the CBI team investigating the death of actor Sushant Singh Rajput. Rajput was found dead at his Mumbai home in Bandra on June 14, 2020.
The CBI took over the investigation in August 2020 following a complaint by Rajput’s family and a dispute over jurisdiction. As an SP, Prasad led a special CBI team and supervised important parts of the investigation, including the examination of witnesses, forensic evidence and medical records.
In 2025, the CBI filed closure reports, stating that its investigation found no evidence of foul play, abetment to suicide or criminal conspiracy in Rajput’s death.
Married to a fellow police officer
Prasad is married to another police officer. In a 2019 interview, she said that having a spouse from the same profession was helpful because they could better understand the pressures, demands and challenges of police service.
