Centre issues notice to Shahrukh Khan, Akshay Kumar, Ajay Devgn in gutka ad case

PTC News Desk: In response to a contempt petition, the central government informed the Allahabad Court's Lucknow bench that it had issued notices to actors Shahrukh Khan,  Akshay Kumar and Ajay Devgn in connection with advertisements they do for gutka companies.

On Friday, the Centre's counsel informed the High Court that the same issue was being heard by the Supreme Court and that the current petition should be dismissed.

The bench set the hearing for May 9, 2024, after hearing the submission.

Earlier, a bench of Justice Rajesh Singh Chauhan directed the central government to decide the petitioner's representation, who had originally argued that action should be taken against actors and dignitaries who received high-profile awards but were advertising for gutka companies.

The petitioner claimed that the representation was made to the government on October 22 but that no action was taken.

Following the hearing of the contempt petition, the high court issued a notice to the central government's Cabinet Secretary.

The Centre had issued show cause notices to Akshay Kumar, Shah Rukh Khan, and Ajay Devgn, according to Deputy Solicitor General SB Pandey, who informed the High Court on Friday.

Amitabh Bachchan also sent a legal notice to a gutka company that was showing his advertisement despite the fact that he had already cancelled his contract with it.
