Centre likely to amend IT rules in next 7-8 days: Union minister on deepfakes menace

PTC News Desk: To tackle the deepfakes menace, the Centre has been planning to introduce amended IT rules within the next seven to eight days. The development was shared by Minister of State for Electronics and Information Technology, Rajeev Chandrasekhar on Tuesday after two rounds of Digital India discussions with various intermediaries.

"We brought their attention to the current rules. We drew their attention to the consequences of noncompliance," Chandrasekhar said. "We have issued an advisory and we have also said that if we are not satisfied with the compliance, we will notify newly amended rules that are much more specific to the issue of misinformation and deep fakes in particular..." the Minister added.

On deepfakes, he stated that every benefit of innovation comes with new challenges and risks.

"Innovation has both advantages and disadvantages...Our policies, rules, and outlook promote an open, safe, and accountable internet. It is our responsibility to ensure that every Indian feels secure and confident on the internet... We'll make rules and laws for it... On the Deepfake issue, we issued an advisory. We will also notify new IT rules in the coming time," he added.
