Deepfake row: Following the circulation of a deepfake video featuring actress Rashmika Mandanna, Delhi Police have located four individuals linked to its online posting. However, authorities continue their pursuit to identify the mastermind and creators behind the manipulated video, as reported by ANI citing police sources.

The viral video, circulating a month ago, triggered discussions on digital security after showcasing a woman, Zara Patel, donning a black workout onesie in an elevator. The AI-edited footage replaced Patel's face with that of Mandanna. Subsequently, investigative efforts commenced to trace the origins of the video by tracking the IP addresses associated with its upload. The Delhi Police's Intelligence Fusion and Strategic Operations (IFSO) registered an FIR on November 11 against unknown individuals following a notice from the Delhi Commission for Women (DCW).

Rashmika Mandanna's reaction to the Deepfake video

Expressing deep distress over the deepfake video, Rashmika Mandanna conveyed her strong sentiments, expressing how "hurtful" it is to discuss and acknowledge the existence of such a video. She emphasized feeling deeply unsettled by the content, deeming it "extremely frightening," not just for herself but for anyone susceptible to the alarming misuse of technology in today's world. Rashmika stressed the potential harm caused by such misuse, highlighting the vulnerability of individuals due to technological exploitation.

The government's response to combat Deepfake videos

Following the widespread circulation of the actor's manipulated video, the government has taken an assertive stance on addressing such incidents. The Ministry of Information Technology, in two communications sent on November 24 to all social media platforms, emphasized their obligation to eliminate misinformation and deepfakes, aligning with Indian regulations. Ashwini Vaishnaw, the IT Minister, highlighted deepfakes as a "new threat to democracy." He reiterated the government's commitment to formulating new regulatory frameworks to address these emerging challenges.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi echoed concerns about the misuse of artificial intelligence to generate 'deepfakes', emphasizing the media's role in creating awareness. At a 'Diwali Milan' event with media representatives at the BJP office in Delhi, Modi expressed apprehensions, describing deepfakes as a potential crisis. He underscored the absence of a robust verification system for a significant section of society, emphasising the grave risks associated with deepfakes.

Referring to a recent instance where he saw a fabricated video of himself participating in a garba dance, Modi highlighted the proficiency of the deepfake, despite the fact that he hasn't engaged in such activity since his school days. He used this example to illustrate the potential dangers posed by manipulated content that could spread misinformation and discontent among the public.
