Punjab sanitation workers call off strike after talks with govt
PTC Web Desk: The prolonged strike by sanitation workers and sewer employees across Punjab came to an end on Thursday following discussions between the state government and representatives of the workers’ unions.
Punjab Finance Minister Harpal Singh Cheema confirmed that a meeting was held with the delegation of sanitation workers and sewer employees, during which several of their demands were discussed. He said the government has also decided to form committees to examine some pending issues and assured that these matters would be reviewed at the earliest.
The strike had severely affected sanitation services in several cities and towns across the state. Large heaps of garbage had accumulated on main roads as well as in residential areas, causing inconvenience to residents and raising concerns over public hygiene.
The protesting employees had primarily demanded the abolition of the contractual employment system and the regularisation of services of temporary workers. They were also seeking a minimum monthly salary of Rs 26,000.
Following the latest round of talks, both sides agreed to end the protest for now, bringing relief to residents affected by the disruption in sanitation services across Punjab.
