Patiala Police crack MBBS student murder case within 36 hours, victim's childhood friend arrested
PTC Web Desk: In a major breakthrough, the Punjab Police have cracked the brutal murder case of MBBS student Dr Kamaldeep Mittal within 36 hours and arrested the main accused involved in the crime.
According to SSP Varun Sharma, the victim, 24-year-old Kamaldeep Mittal, a resident of Bareta in Mansa district, was pursuing MBBS studies at Government Medical College, Patiala. His body was found under suspicious circumstances at his PG accommodation in New Lal Bagh Colony under Civil Lines police station limits on May 18 around 5.30 pm.
Initial investigation and forensic examination revealed that the student had been brutally murdered with a sharp-edged weapon. Following the incident, senior police officials rushed to the spot and multiple investigation teams were formed to crack the case.
Based on the statement of the victim’s father, a case was registered at Civil Lines police station and an extensive investigation was launched.
During the probe, the police identified the victim’s childhood friend, Mohit Verma, a resident of Bareta in Mansa district, as the prime accused. Investigators found that both had been close friends since their school days.
The police said Mohit Verma allegedly lured Kamaldeep Mittal into investing nearly Rs 35 lakh in share market and online trading schemes by promising huge profits. However, the money was reportedly lost in online gaming and betting activities.
According to the police investigation, tensions escalated when Kamaldeep started demanding his money back and threatened to file a complaint. The police alleged that Mohit then conspired to murder him.
On May 17, the accused arrived in Patiala and stayed at the victim’s PG accommodation. The two reportedly watched a movie together and later returned after watching a cricket match. The next morning, when Kamaldeep was preparing to leave for college, Mohit allegedly attacked him with a knife that he had hidden earlier and stabbed him multiple times, leading to his death.
The police further revealed that after committing the crime, the accused transferred nearly Rs 25,000 from the victim’s phone to his own bank account. He also allegedly attempted to destroy evidence and left behind a handwritten note to mislead investigators.
Considering the seriousness of the case, the Patiala Police conducted raids at multiple locations, including Mansa, Jakhal in Haryana, Amritsar, Ludhiana, Rupnagar and Chandigarh. The accused was eventually arrested on May 20 within 36 hours of the investigation.
SSP Varun Sharma said the police are now questioning the accused in detail and efforts are underway to recover the weapon used in the murder. He added that every aspect related to the case is being thoroughly investigated.
