Delhi-NCR hit by massive dust storm, IMD issues red alert as winds touch 100 kmph
Delhi weather: A powerful dust storm swept through Delhi and nearby areas on Tuesday afternoon, bringing strong winds, reduced visibility and a sudden change in weather conditions. Following the storm, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued a red alert and warned residents to remain cautious over the next few hours.
The weather department said strong winds, thunderstorms and light rain were likely to affect several parts of Delhi-NCR. Wind speeds were expected to reach up to 100 kmph in some areas.
The weather changed rapidly around 2:30 pm when dust clouds covered roads and residential areas across the capital and surrounding regions. Visibility dropped sharply in many locations as strong gusts of wind carried dust through the air.
The storm also brought relief from the intense heat that had affected the region in recent days. Temperatures had remained above normal, creating conditions favourable for strong weather activity.
Weather experts say such conditions are common during the period before the arrival of the southwest monsoon.
Meanwhile, apart from Delhi, alerts were issued for several locations in Haryana, Uttar Pradesh and Rajasthan.
In Haryana, areas, including Sonepat, Rohtak, Kharkhoda, Bhiwani and Charkhi Dadri were expected to be affected. In Uttar Pradesh, warnings were issued for Bagpat, Khekra, Pilakhua and Sikandrabad. Parts of Rajasthan, including Alwar, Bhiwadi, Tijara and Deeg, were also placed under alert.
The IMD advised people to stay indoors during strong winds, avoid unnecessary travel and secure loose objects that could be blown away.
