Earthquake of magnitude 5.7 jolts Bangladesh, tremors felt in Kolkata
PTC News Desk: Strong tremors were felt in Kolkata, parts of West Bengal, and Northeast India after a 5.5 magnitude earthquake hit near Dhaka, Bangladesh, on Friday, according to the US Geological Survey (USGS).
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) said the quake occurred at 10:08 am, 13 km south-southwest of Narsingdi, which is about 50 km from Dhaka, at a depth of 10 km. So far, there are no reports of damage, injuries, or casualties.
In Kolkata, many people felt the tremors around 10:10 am for a few seconds and rushed out of their homes and offices in fear. Social media users also shared videos of the moments when the tremors were felt. The quake was felt in other districts of West Bengal too, such as Cooch Behar and Dakshin and Uttar Dinajpur.
People in Guwahati, Agartala, and Shillong also reported feeling the tremors. In Dhaka, the earthquake briefly stopped the Test match between Bangladesh and Ireland, but the game continued after a few minutes. No damage was reported.
