Himachal rain fury: 50 killed in landslides amid relentless 24-hour downpour, rescue efforts on
Himachal Rains: Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu announced on Monday that over 50 individuals had died in the last 24 hours as a result of landslides and heavy rains in the area. He also voiced concern that over 20 people may be trapped under the debris.
CM Sukhu also stated that search and rescue efforts are underway in the region. Due to the devastating events, the state decided not to host any cultural activities for Independence Day.
"Over 50 people have lost their lives in the state in the last 24 hours. Over 20 people are still trapped, the death toll can also increase. A search and rescue operation is underway. We have taken the decision not to organise any cultural programme on the occasion of Independence Day," the Himachal CM said.
"President Droupadi Murmu, Union Home Minister Amit Shah, Mallikarjun Kharge, BJP chief JP Nadda, and Congress leaders Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi have all called for all possible assistance to the state government," the CM said.
Union Home Minister Amit Shah said on Monday that the deaths in various parts of the state are terribly upsetting and that National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) teams are assisting with rescue and relief efforts.
Shah took to the microblogging site X (previously Twitter) to express his heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families, praying to God to give them strength to bear the sorrow, and wished for the speedy recovery of the injured.
"The loss of lives due to heavy rains and landslides at various places in Himachal Pradesh is extremely distressing. NDRF teams are engaged in relief and rescue operations along with the local administration. I express my deepest condolences to the bereaved families. May God give them the strength to bear this sorrow. I wish for the speedy recovery of the injured," Shah said.
