New Delhi, December 20: The Agra Municipal Corporation has issued a notice to the Archeological Survey of India (ASI) demanding that it pay Rs 1.9 crore in water tax and Rs 1.5 lakh in property tax on the Taj Mahal, a protected monument famous around the world. The bills are for the fiscal years 2021-22 and 2022-23, according to media reports.

ASI has been directed to clear the outstanding dues within 15 days, failing which the property (Taj Mahal) will be "attached" if the tax is not paid within the time frame.

However, ASI superintending archaeologist Raj Kumar Patel, talking to the media, clarified that such notices must have come by mistake as this has never happened earlier ever. In addition, the Taj Mahal is a protected monument. As a result, the ASI is not required to pay such taxes.
