Pakistani troops shell civilian areas along LoC in Kupwara for second consecutive day; India retaliates

Pakistani forces resorted to cross-border shelling along the Line of Control (LoC) in Jammu and Kashmir’s Kupwara district for the second straight day on Thursday, officials confirmed. The escalation follows India’s recent targeting of terror infrastructure across the border under Operation Sindoor.

According to officials, Pakistani troops fired shells and mortars targeting civilian areas in the Karnah sector shortly after midnight. The Indian armed forces responded with effective retaliatory fire to counter the unprovoked aggression. No casualties have been reported so far.

Most residents in Karnah had already moved to safer locations on Wednesday after initial shelling by Pakistani forces in the wake of Operation Sindoor.

Intense shelling by Pakistani troops along both the LoC and the International Border in the Poonch and Tangdhar regions resulted in the deaths of 15 Indian nationals and injuries to 43 others late Tuesday night, according to Army sources.

    Pakistan closes entire airspace

In a dramatic escalation of tensions, Pakistan has closed its entire airspace following precision missile strikes by the Indian armed forces on multiple terror camps located in Pakistan-occupied Kashmir and deep inside Pakistan.

Earlier, Islamabad had only barred Indian-owned, leased, or operated aircraft from its skies. However, in the wake of India's coordinated strikes—conducted between 1:05 am and 1:30 am IST under Operation Sindoor—Pakistan's Civil Aviation Authority has declared a 48-hour no-fly zone for all civilian and international flights, including domestic operations, allowing only essential flights to proceed.

The Indian strikes were reportedly in response to the Pahalgam terror attack, which claimed the lives of 26 civilians. The attack, described as religiously motivated, occurred shortly after a provocative and communal speech by Pakistani Army chief General Asim Munir. India attributes the attack to terrorist groups operating with Pakistan’s backing.

Flight operations in Islamabad and Lahore were severely impacted, with aircraft diverted to Karachi Airport, which soon reached capacity. The full airspace closure came shortly after these diversions. Meanwhile, India has also restricted flight activity at airports along its western border as a precaution.

Pakistan’s Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif convened a meeting of the National Security Council to determine the country’s next steps. While Pakistan claims its airspace closure is a precautionary move, it has vowed to respond.

However, military analysts emphasise that any strike by Pakistan now would be viewed as an escalation, not a retaliation, given that India’s action was framed as a response to cross-border terrorism.

India has reiterated to the global community that any further provocation from Pakistan will be met with resolute retaliation.

The escalation came shortly after India launched Operation Sindoor at 1:05 AM, executing a 25-minute precision strike targeting nine terror camps located in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir. The camps were linked to three major terror outfits: Jaish-e-Mohammed (JeM), Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT), and Hizbul Mujahideen.

SAD's Harsimrat Kaur Badal issues statement on killing of Sikhs

"I am deeply pained to learn about the tragic deaths of Bhai Amrik Singh Raagi, ex-serviceman Amarjeet Singh, and shopkeeper Ranjit Singh due to shelling by Pakistan in Poonch. It is also distressing to hear that a gurdwara was targeted and damaged. I strongly condemn this cowardly act. I am confident that the Government of India will avenge this heinous attack and ensure that the sacrifice of these three martyrs does not go in vain. Pakistan will be given a befitting response—one that will make it think a hundred times before attempting to disrupt peace in India again."

Operation Sindoor: India Launches Air Strikes on Pakistan
    • 9 terror camps hit, 30 killed
    • Jaish, LeT headquarters destroyed; India fires 24 missiles

Operation Sindoor: In a swift and focused counter-terror operation, the Indian Armed Forces on Wednesday launched Operation Sindoor, targeting terrorist infrastructure in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Jammu and Kashmir (PoK). The strikes, which hit nine specific sites linked to planning and executing terror attacks against India, were carried out in response to the recent barbaric assault in Pahalgam that killed 26 persons, including one Nepali national.

The Ministry of Defence (MoD) clarified that no Pakistani military facilities were targeted. “Our actions have been focused, measured, and non-escalatory in nature. India has demonstrated considerable restraint in selecting targets and the method of execution,” the MoD stated. The ministry emphasised that the operation was a direct response to the Pahalgam Terror Attack, reaffirming India’s resolve to hold those responsible accountable.

According to the MoD, precision strikes were carried out on all nine locations to dismantle the infrastructure used by terror groups operating from across the border.

On the other side, Pakistan's military formally confirmed the missile strikes by India. Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) Director General Lt Gen Ahmed Sharif Chaudhry alleged that Indian missiles struck three locations — Kotli, Bahawalpur, and Muzaffarabad — including Subhanullah Mosque in Bahawalpur’s Ahmed East area. Describing the strikes as a "cowardly attack," Chaudhry stated that tensions between the two countries have escalated in the wake of the Pahalgam attack, which India blames on Pakistan-based groups. Islamabad has denied any involvement and offered to participate in an independent investigation.

Despite the rising tensions, India’s Ministry of Defence underscored that Operation Sindoor was carefully calibrated to avoid escalation, reiterating that no Pakistani military sites were hit during the strikes.
