India slashes import duty on American whiskey up to 50 % amid global tariff war
PTC News Desk: Amid escalating global tariff war, India has slashed import duty on American whiskey Bourbon up to 50 per cent, according to a notification issued by Ministry of Finance (Department of Revenue).
India has reduced the import duty on bourbon whiskey to 50%, down from the previous 150%, as part of efforts to foster trade talks with the US. This reduction, announced on February 13, coincided with Prime Minister Narendra Modi's upcoming discussions with US President Donald Trump. However, there has been no change in the basic customs duty on other types of liquor, which will still incur a 100% duty.
The US is the leading exporter of bourbon whiskey to India, accounting for about a quarter of all bourbon imports into the country. In the 2023-24 period, India imported bourbon whiskey worth USD 2.5 million, with the US contributing USD 0.75 million of that total.
India's move to reduce the duty on bourbon whiskey is part of broader efforts to negotiate a significant trade deal with the US. Both nations aim to more than double their bilateral trade to USD 500 billion by 2030 and are working toward a trade agreement to lower duties and enhance market access.
