Jammu and Kashmir CM Omar Abdullah has decided to keep Ganderbal seat on Monday. The National Conference leader resigned from Budgam sear after securing a victory from both seats in recent Assembly elections.

Jammu & Kashmir CM Omar Abdullah keeps Ganderbal seat, resigns from Budgam

PTC News Desk: Jammu and Kashmir CM Omar Abdullah has decided to keep Ganderbal seat on Monday. The National Conference leader resigned from Budgam sear after securing a victory from both seats in recent Assembly elections, annoucned Pro-Tem Speaker Mubarak Gul.

The 54-year-old NC leader won the Budgam seat in the recently held Jammu and Kashmir elections. He defeated Aga Syed Muntazir Mehdi, the People's Democratic Party (PDP) candidate, by 18,485 votes. 


The vice president of the National Conference also won in Ganderbal, a stronghold of the Abdullah family. He defeated PDP candidate Bashir Ahmed Mir by 10,574 votes. 

During his first term as chief minister, Omar Abdullah served as a Ganderbal MLA from 2009 to 2014. This seat was represented by his father, Farooq Abdullah, and grandfather, Sheikh Abdullah, who formed the NC. 

With Abdullah leaving Budgam, the National Conference's strength in the 95-member house has been reduced to 41, although the party still maintains a comfortable majority with the support of six Congress MLAs, five Independents, and one MLA each from the AAP and the CPI(M).
