Kashmir's long dry spell ends: Season's first snowfall graces Gulmarg
Srinagar, September 25: An overnight rainfall finally brought an end to the nearly two-month-long unprecedented dry spell in Kashmir, accompanied by the season's initial snowfall in the picturesque ski resort of Gulmarg.
Kashmir had experienced an unusually dry September with only 20 mm of precipitation until Saturday, falling short of the average of 75 mm for the month. The region had also grappled with higher-than-usual summer temperatures this year, leading to a heatwave that local residents were not accustomed to.

On September 12, the summer capital, Srinagar, recorded a temperature of 34.2 degrees Celsius, just below the all-time highest recorded temperature of 35 degrees Celsius set in 1934. The prolonged dry spell had caused significant concern for apple growers, as the lack of necessary moisture had been impacting the crop's quality in various parts of the Valley.
As a fresh layer of snow blanketed the meadows, Gulmarg reported a minimum temperature of 4 degrees Celsius on Monday. Meanwhile, the hill station of Pahalgam recorded a low of 7.8 degrees Celsius, and Srinagar saw a minimum temperature of 10.8 degrees Celsius for the night.
