Lawyer shot dead in Bihar's Patna by unidentified assailants, fourth killing in 24 hours
PTC News Desk: A 58-year-old man, Jitendra Kumar Mahto, was fatally shot on Thursday in the Sultanpur police station area of Patna, marking the fourth shooting incident reported in Bihar within a 24-hour span.
Patna East SP Parichay Kumar stated that Mahto was attacked by unidentified gunmen while returning from a tea break. “Jitendra Mahato was shot by criminals and later succumbed to his injuries at the hospital,” Kumar confirmed. He also noted that three bullet casings were recovered from the scene, and an investigation is underway, exploring all possible leads.
Mahto, reportedly a lawyer by profession, had not been actively practising for the past two years, according to police officials. His family informed authorities that he visited the same location daily for tea. “He had come here for tea today as usual and was shot while on his way back,” SP Kumar stated.
Patna City ASP Atulesh Jha also visited the crime scene, and the investigation is being handled by the Sultanpur police station team. The Forensic Science Laboratory (FSL) has been notified, and police have started reviewing CCTV footage from nearby locations in an effort to identify the culprits.
This incident comes on the heels of three other fatal shootings reported across Bihar within just 24 hours, heightening concerns about the state’s law and order situation ahead of the upcoming elections.
In the first of the recent cases, businessman Putu Khan was shot in the head at close range by unidentified gunmen at Mehsaul Chowk—Sitamarhi district’s busiest marketplace.
Just hours later, another shooting occurred in Sheikhpura village of Patna district, where 50-year-old veterinary doctor Surendra Kumar was attacked while irrigating his field. Officials reported that assailants on a motorcycle opened fire on him. He was discovered unconscious with gunshot wounds and taken to AIIMS Patna by local residents, but he succumbed to his injuries during treatment.
These incidents followed a separate killing on Friday evening in Patna’s Ramkrishna Nagar area, where grocery store owner Vikram Jha was fatally shot by an unidentified attacker. Police have initiated investigations, though the motive behind the crime remains unknown.
